Dal Makhani is a dish that originates from the Punjab region of India. The main ingredients are black lentils, red kidney beans, cream and butter. The dish gets its texture from the use of butter and cream. You can also prepare it using with yoghurt or milk.
Ingredients
3 tbsp Garlic and Ginger paste
4 tbsp Kashmiri Red Chili Powder
1 tbsp Turmeric Powder
2 tbsp Cumin Powder
2 tbsp Coriander Powder
3 tbsp Ghee
3 tbsp Butter
2 tbsp Red Chili Powder
2 tbsp Salt 250 grams Fresh Coriander
2 Medium Size Onions
3 tbsp Fresh Yogurt
2 tbsp Garam Masala
1 cup Tomato Puree 600 ml water
2-litre water
3 cup Black lentils
3 cups of Kidney beans
Place a cooking pot on your cooker and ad the black lentils into it. Next, let's add the kidney beans. Now let's add some water as well as some salt. Let's mix the cooking pot and then close the lid. Let's leave it closed for 1 hour on medium flame.
After an hour has passed, remove your lid and check the beans and lentils. It should be boiled.
Cooking the Masala
In a second cooking pot, place it on your coker and add the ghee into it. Next, add your onions and allow the onions to cook until they are rich in golden brown. Let's now add the garlic paste as well as the ginger paste. Also, add the salt and give the cooking pot a good mix.
Now let's add the tomato puree and give it another good mix. Next, let's add the turmeric powder as well as the Kashmiri red chilli. We will also add the normal chilli powder.
Let's also add the fresh coriander and give it a good mix. The coriander will help to maintain a fresh taste.
Adding the Dal
Add the Dal from earlier and give the cooking pot a really good mix. You should now have your masala and dal in a single cooking pot. Add in some water to ensure that it does not burn. On a low flame, let the dal cook until the water reaches boiling point.
With the dal now almost ready, add the coriander powder as well as the cumin powder. Now we will also add the garam masala powder and then give the cooking pot a really good mix.
Further Freshness
To make our Dal Makhani fresher, let's add some coriander to the dish.
Preparing the Makhani
In another small pan, add some butter. Make sure to not heat it too much as it will burn. Add your chilli powder into the pan and mix the chilli powder into the butter.
Pour the Makhani into the Dal
Your makhani should now be ready to pour it all over your dal from earlier. You can also add some fresh coriander and some cream to top up the Dal Makhani.
Your dish should now be ready to serve.
